About us

The year was 2013, and our founder Derk de Korver, through means of a bet, decided to sign up for his first triathlon. Having little to no experience in swimming cycling or running, he was unaware of the vast amount of equipment he needed in order to practice each sport. He spent a small fortune buying all his gear but soon found out that price and quality were not always aligned and that using poor quality equipment could lead to injury.

Frustrated by this experience the idea for Start Smart Sports was born. The original idea was to create a web-site that offered the absolute best selection of training equipment for swimming, cycling and running in terms of quality, styles, colors and sizes. As a side note, it turns out that Derk’s bet uncovered some natural talent as today he competes in Ironman Triathlons and ranks in the top 1% of the world. His philosophy to this day is that every training counts and that one shouldn’t have to deal with equipment failure, so Start Smart.

Over the past 3 years, the brand and aspirations have evolved, and in addition to offering the best selection, with the goal to the the company that provides the absolute best service online.

So here is the vision:

  • One day, 30% of all retail transactions in the US will be online.
  • People will buy from the company with the best service and the best selection.

We believe that the speed at which a customer receives an online purchase plays a very important role in how that customer thinks about shopping online again in the future, so at Start Smart Sports, we have put a lot of focus on making sure the items get delivered to our customers as quickly as possible. In order to do that, we warehouse everything that we sell, and unlike most other online retailers, we don't make an item available for sale unless it is physically present in our warehouse.

Our goal is to position Start Smart Sports as the sports equipment leader. If we can get customers to associate the brand with the absolute best service and quality, then we can expand into other product categories beyond sports. And, we're doing just that.
